I never understand this kind of thing. It's like someone saying "I can never buy a Honda because it just can't tow all the things I tow on my farm, or drive through deep mud." But then he drives his F350 every day 30 miles and back from home to town to do errands and get groceries getting 12 miles to the gallon. Most people would (and do) get a efficient small car for that sort of thing.

The fact is, the iPad is mostly a content consumption product. It's REALLY REALLY good at being that. Sure you can get some things done on it, too, but that's clearly not the intent of this design. If you need power to crunch your data and be "300%+ more productive" then sure you need your F350 for the time and place where it's appropriate. The iPad isn't going to fully replace your desktop that you need to earn your living.

For a lot of people, this means they don't need the super expensive laptop to cover their bases. They can get the cheaper desktop, with more power and bigger screen, and then have an iPad to cover their mobile (and again 90% of the time doing content consumption) needs.

I suppose my post came off in the wrong way. I have nothing against the iPad per se, simply the concept of having it as a primary computing device. I have used one quite a bit, and it's a great device, however I would really rather not write long papers, do spreadsheets, etc with it. That's just not practical IMO. I do see your point of the full on computer not being fully necessary all the time though.

The average normal person should not be touch typing. Before computers, the majority of homes did not have a typewriter. Most businessman did not have a typewriter on their desk either (their secretaries did), and certainly not a keypunch machine. This keyboard everywhere UI has only been common for 3 decades and hopefully will be gone in a lot less than another 3 decades. The popular tablets (PalmPilot, iPad) are good first steps.

What's wrong with a keyboard or touch typing? I guess I don't see where you're going with this, as typing on a touch screen for long pieces of work or long periods of time is far less efficient. I see where the touch interface has its uses, but in some places it's just far less practical.

Apple should've held out on the refresh to include USB 3 and even HDMI. Thunderbolt and the is currently useless.

if apple came out with an iPhone the size of the RAZR or smaller with the same capacity/functionality as an 8GB iPod nano, id buy it.

if it did all that AND had functionality like a pda, id sell my grandmother to buy it.

I agree. All I want is a thin form factor (flip or bar), and the ability to sync ical, itunes (including video) and iphoto.

I have the new ipad 2 and installed xcode 3.2 from my snow leopard disc, but there's no option to enable developer mode in iTunes (latest version). Does anyone know how to enable developer mode?

    Thanks.

    1.419$/Litre or 5.51$/US Gallon.

The only place in North America where gas is ridiculously HIGH....QUEBEC. Taxes represent 30-35% of the cost of gas. *sigh* But at least our roads are smooth... Oh no wait, they are not.

    Ta-bar-nak!

The rest of Canada isn't all that far behind Quebec (which, to anybody looking, is NOT pronounced qwah-bec), but that still is bloody high. I bet out in NL it's pushing $1.50/litre.

Ditto! Slingbox rocks! And it's even more fun when you have a friend or two in other states that allow you to use their Slingbox to watch events that are blacked out in your own area. :)

    Mark

Yup. If I ever switch providers I'm putting a Slingbox in my dad's house so I can watch the NFL Sunday Ticket.

You can pay the Yesnetwork.com 100 bucks to watch the Yankees online at work, or I can watch for free on my Slingbox.

This is madness. The Verizon website is still showing the original price for iPad 1. (And my Verizon store claims to know nothing about the lowered prices).

Because most Apple products have hardware AND software so you might not know where to look for your specific issue/for the information you want.

For example if I was looking up information on the iPod Touch, there will be information on the hardware and information on the software, but they will be in different places.

It is possible to guide the user to the correct information that they're looking for just with decently written Guides and smart use of redirects.

    Example:
Problem: The iPod touch is a subset of the iPhone and does not entirely warrant its own article.
Solution: Automatically redirect users from /iPod_Touch to /iPhone#iPod_Touch

Problem: User wants to look up information on the iPod touch's hardware.
Solution: Redirect user from /iPod_Touch to /iPhone#iPod_Touch

Problem: User wants to look up information on the iPod touch's software.
Solution: Redirect user from /iPod_Touch to /iPhone#iPod_Touch and place an iPod Touch Software link at the start of the section which redirects to /iPhone_OS.

Err, well I'm not making suggestions that that's the exact place they should redirect or anything, but I'm making a point that it's possible to guide the user to the place that they are looking for.

    Sebastian

Which cameras in particular. It already supports all the serious Pro cameras if you ignore the very recently announced Canon and Nikon amature DSLRs.

My brother is a photographer, and has a medium format mumiya camera with digital back

It supports his SLRS, but not his mumiya

So, he can't really use aperture.

    And it begins.

I suspect we'll see a few more announcements in the near future - all meant to kick the Zune's butt. :D

No kidding!! iPod integration in airplanes!??! The iPod connector is becoming as much of a standard as a headphone jack is.

whenever i hear podcast i immediately think of apple, so why is apple shutting down free advertising?

Ever think that Apple might not want you to think of them when you download some of the crap podcasts that would be, and have already become available???

Apple would lose control of something they have been able to, for the most part, control up to now.

Like Janet Jackson, Apple likes control.

I figured this out last night poking around in System Profiler on the new Mac Mini display unit in the local Apple Store. There was a new, separate entry for "Card Reader" that I hadn't seen before. Lo and behold, there it was, "SDXC", supporting 2.5GT/s (that's 2.5Gbps before taking into account the all the data transfer protocol overhead).

Doing some more poking, I found in the Ethernet section the fact that the new Minis use a Broadcom BCM57765 (http://www.broadcom.com/products/Ethernet-Controllers/Enterprise-Client/BCM57765) controllerwhich just happens to also include the memory card reader controller, which supports SDXC.

What is your point? If you have something to say, then say it, don't post useless links.

It's called sarcasm - some get it and some don't.

With the Xserve getting canned, it's likely that Apple will shift Lion server hard towards SOHO needs and further away from the needs of larger enterprise environments.

How will this affect so many Universities that have implemented iTunes U?!

I wonder why the 2 plans have to be mutually exclusive. Why not download the whole database when you get it, for when you might not get coverage. And then automatically update when you do have coverage. When going somewhere, give priority updating to the current route and then download everything else. Maybe allow current route to be updated with EDGE/3G while whole database updates require Wi-Fi. Just my 2

That's exactly what i was thinking, makes perfect sense to me. Have a download of the standard maps, and have them update themselves as you travel.

If I would leak something, I would make sure the device is clean, the camera is in focus and there is enough light.

Why are leaked images (almost) always such bad quality?

In addition, you might read up on this and see that this is really douchebag behavior we're talking about where a publisher has a "free" game for kids and then charges $100 multiple times for "smurfberries". That's pretty slimy behavior. The intention is to get a child who doesn't understand it's not play money to have their parents download the app and put in their password, then use the 15-minute window to rob the parents. The parents are thinking this is some harmless game until they get the bill.

I would call this bad parenting if it didn't involve trickery. Do you really expect a child to understand the difference between play money and real money?

Just checked into an Apple Store in Salem, NH - they have high end Verizon iPad 2 and they have had them regularly. Asians have been scooping up the stores other versions each morning in cash sales (or purchasing mall gift cards and Apple gift cards).

They said consumer demand is much greater for AT&T (GSM) iPad 2 than Verizon.

I'll wait for my wifi iPad 2 to arrive in the mail sometime next week.

    sry people, no update yet.

I didn't find the time to work on the new features last week. But, today i picked up the work again. I will probably be able to put out a new version by the end of this week. So don't despair...
If you don't see an update before monday next week you can start nagging, a tiny bit ;)

    Cheers

Yea see I don't like his campaign. I recently watched an interview and he said he would renegotiate with China about our debt and the lady said you can't just call a nation and do that and Trump said with the right people you can do anything. I laughed so hard at that. China is not just going to cave in to your requests. And also the only thing his "campaign" will run on is the birther issue which will get him nowhere.

Well you kinda can if you know enough of the right people :)

. I just hope the republicans find a good candidate because I really don't want Obama back in office.

I feel similarly but also as if Republicans are like "ok guys, what's the WORST candiate we can think of to put up?" for president as of late. Maybe Sarah Palin got character assassinated (which probably happened some) but even as someone who liked McCain she drove me up the wall with how ditzy she seemingly tried to be.

Just goes to prove that Consumer Reports will tell you a lie and then show you a picture of it.
    +1

It's probably a QC issue. Some are thicker while others are not.
