I can most definitely believe this.

I've personally witnessed the rather dramatic decline in Apple quality control over the last year.

It's unlike ever before and very discouraging.

Give me a break... I've heard this claim over and over and over and over for more years than I care to admit. It's as if there was once upon a time Apple released perfect products without any glitches whatsoever, but now everything they release is plagued with problems.

It's a fact... nearly every product line Apple has ever released has had its hiccups, whether it's overheating computers, faulty logic boards, problems with displays, adhesives etc etc.

You haven't witnessed any sort of dramatic decline in Apple's QC... you just like to believe that you have.

Awesome, I love it! I want to sign up for .Mac so bad, but I can't justify it being worth $99 per year. I would gladly pay $49 per year, especially since I would use iWeb, Photocasting, and all the other good stuff.
just buy it off ebay. I bought mine for maybe $60 including shipping but I was impatient; if you hunt around long enough, you can get it for even less!

oh, great. Just the thing aliens will use to find out where I am and abduct me again. Yeah, sure I had to opt in, but do you know how hard it is to say no to location features?! I mean seriously, don't they realize all the bad ways people, er 'others', can use technology like this.

If they get me again I'm

    lol.. dang that sucks.

I'll take Apples definition of what is and isn't good looking over yours thanks

I'll take my own definition over Apple's or yours. Seriously, the phone is damn good looking, but you'll take Apple's opinion over your on?

I was in line for the iPhone 4 last June at Stonebriar Mall in Frisco at 11pm. They kicked everybody out (disbursed the line) at something like 2am that morning. Talk about a disaster! I really hope security and Apple have a better plan arranged this time! I'm thinking I may try to get off work early and get in line at around 1:00pm

I think that Apple is doing a much better effort at protecting its assets. Keep in mind what happened a certain software giant (who's name will be omitted but is known for making a poor rip-off of the Mac operating system) got away with stealing from Apple...

it would be great if the "full" version is included. maybe you're forced to purchase additional "packs" via app-store if you want to enhance a "basic" server version, i.e. mail-server etc.

There's no indication on Apple's Lion preview page that they're packaging a gutted server package with additional add-ons to be sold separately.

    Easy Setup
Lion Server guides you through configuring your Mac as a server. And it provides local and remote administration — for users and groups, push notifications, file sharing, calendaring, mail, contacts, chat, Time Machine, VPN, web, and wiki services — all in one place.

It's all speculation at this point, but a description like that makes it sound like ALL of Lion Server is included in each copy of Lion.

I'll be there, either at five-ish or four. Are there going to be more than five hundred people queuing before opening? Given the number of online orders, I don't know...

Synchro, I was there too! Got there about 5:45am thanks to the reliability of this country's transport system when no-one's using it (:P) and the queue was mind-bogglingly huge then. I got a t-shirt then, though! :D

I need to pick up not one, but two (honesty to the extreme) Leopard family packs does anyone think Apple will take pity on me and give me two shirts (one for the person I'm buying a family pack for)?

But this discount is not directly to students. It is for institutional purchase I think. Did anyone get this discount through their school?

How did they verify your educational status? I've ordered 3 personal computers from Apple over the years, but I don't ever remember having to verify my educational status as a teacher.

I had to verify because I applied for a Student Developer membership. I was required to fax a copy of my current class schedule along with my student ID and drivers license. Once the membership was verified they processed my hardware order. If you are going for the regular educational discount, they don't always ask for verification. However, because they give a hefty developer discount, I'm sure they want to make sure you're a legitimate student.

... sooo, a thermocouple (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermocouple) on a chip? Thermocouples have horrendous efficiency. I don't see how a such a chip in an enclosed environment (like a laptop motherboard) can achieve enough of a thermal gradient to produce enough current to be useful.

    I dunno, i'm skeptical.

Skeptical you should be, but these aren't really thermocouples. The same physical principle applies, but thermocouples are really only for temperature measurement. These are thermoelectric coolers. See here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peltier-Seebeck_effect).

If you want to power the temperature change yourself, you need a high current. But if you want to generate electricity from them, then just connect them into a circuit with out any powersupply i.e. stick a fan's power terminals on that, stick one side of the TEC on a hot chip or cup of tea etc. to setup the delta T. (temp difference) then the fan will start spinning!

    Dan :-)

While what you're saying is true in principle, I seriously doubt the practicality of what you're suggesting. TECs are moderately efficient at converting electricity into a temperature differential (or being used as a heat pump), but their efficiency in the other mode of operation (Seebeck effect) is very, very low (typ. < 5%). If you take a chip-sized (~ 1 cm^2) TEC, connect it between a hot processor core at 100 C and ambient temperature at 25 C, you will not have enough power to turn a computer fan at any modest speed. Furthermore, even if you could harvest that electricity and store it, the added energy would be less than 0.1% of a typical laptop battery.

If you wanted to use a larger TEC module (say 16 cm^2) on top of the 80 C CPU case, then the added energy would be less than 1%.

Estimates based on info here (http://www.ferrotec.com/technology/thermoelectric/thermalRef13.php).

I thought there were some free map/gps/turn-by-turn direction apps out there (ala Google Maps). Is this not the case? Can anyone tell me why you would want to purchase one of the Garmin/Tom-Tom apps?

Have they fixed the issue where the News Feed constantly reverts to "Live Feed" view even though you've selected "Status Updates"?

Because that problem right there is reason enough for me not to install it.

It does. You need to go into Tools --> Synch Services and enable calendar sync. I then restarted Outlook and iTunes, synced my iPhone (Info --> Advanced --> Replace info on this iPhone) and everything was there when I went into the calendar.

    :apple:

EDIT: It also keeps the category colours from Outlook which is awesome, as Entourage never managed to do this.

Well, I just recently switched from Windows to Mac OS X. In Windows, one is able to sync Outlook through iTunes with the iPhone. But in OS X, iTunes shows only the sync options with iCal and Address Book contacts, nothing from Outlook. I'm probably missing something here and would appreciate some enlightenment. Thanks to anyone in advance!

I would definitely take sandy bridge over what is essentially a 5+ year old CPU.

I don't think the new Intel graphics is horrible as some people suggest. But then again, I am only a light gamer.

If you set the settings to low, you can pretty much run anything on anything. I remember being able to run Crysis on a GMA950.

As someone already pointed out, the Army currently uses iPods with translation programs in the field.

The advantage is that they're comparatively cheap, and young soldiers already know the basics of using them.

It's also been mentioned that the Army could use them to display videos of local leaders asking people to cooperate, etc. Plus remote control of robots, etc.

As for visiting Apple, who knows. Usually the military finds a third party company to modify units, but in this case they could be checking to see if Apple was willing to build a bunch for less.
